Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes by Maurice Leblanc

LeBlanc's creation, gentleman thief Arsene Lupin, is everything you would expect from a French aristocrat -- witty, charming, brilliant, sly . . . and possibly the greatest thief in the world. In this classic tale, Lupin comes up against the only man who may be able to stop him . . . no less than the great British gentleman-detective Herlock Sholmes! Who will emerge triumphant?

Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes (also known as Arsène Lupin vs. Herlock Sholmes) is a collection of short stories written by Maurice Leblanc, first published in 1908. This book features the famous gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, who engages in a battle of wits with a fictionalized version of the renowned detective Sherlock Holmes. However, due to legal issues (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, did not give Leblanc permission to use the name "Sherlock Holmes"), Leblanc had to alter the name to "Herlock Sholmes" for this collection, though the character remains essentially the same as the Holmes character.

The collection includes several stories where the brilliant, charismatic Lupin faces off against the sharp, logical detective Sholmes, creating a thrilling series of intellectual duels. The rivalry between Lupin and Sholmes is a central theme of the book, and the stories are filled with clever tricks, elaborate heists, and intricate puzzles, all wrapped up in the tension between the two adversaries.
