here was a large audience assembled on the 14th of January, 1862, at the session of the Royal Geographical Society, No. 3 Waterloo Place, London. The president, Sir Francis M -, made an important communication to his colleagues, in an address that was frequently interrupted by applause. This rare specimen of eloquence terminated with the following sonorous phrases bubbling over with patriotism: "England has always marched at the head of nations"
The story follows the daring journey of three men—Dr. Samuel Fergusson, a British doctor and scientist; Joe, his loyal servant; and Richard Shaffery, a wealthy and enthusiastic friend—who embark on an expedition to cross the African continent by balloon. The novel begins with Dr. Fergusson's desire to explore Africa, a largely uncharted region in the 19th century. He proposes the idea of traveling over the continent using a hot-air balloon, which would allow them to circumvent the dangers of land travel, such as wild animals and hostile tribes.
The balloon, named the Victoria, is equipped with all the necessary supplies for the trip, including provisions, instruments for navigating, and a few scientific tools. The three men set off from Zanzibar on the east coast of Africa, hoping to reach the western coast, a journey that will take them through unknown and treacherous landscapes, including vast deserts, jungles, and rugged mountain ranges. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including violent storms, wild animals, and difficult terrain, all of which test their resourcefulness and endurance.
Throughout the journey, Dr. Fergusson remains calm and composed, using his scientific knowledge to navigate the balloon and solve problems as they arise. Joe, the servant, proves to be brave and practical, while Shaffery is the more emotional and occasionally reckless member of the group. As they travel, they face dilemmas that challenge their survival and the success of their mission, but their determination and ingenuity keep them going.
