Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Great Expectations charts the progress of Pip from childhood through often painful experiences to adulthood, as he moves from the Kent marshes to busy, commercial London, encountering a variety of extraordinary characters ranging from Magwitch, the escaped convict, to Miss Havisham, locked up with her unhappy past and living with her ward, the arrogant, beautiful Estella.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, first published in 1861, is a coming-of-age novel that follows the life and personal growth of Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, a young orphan raised by his sister and her husband in rural England. The novel begins with Pip's chance encounter with an escaped convict, Magwitch, who later plays a crucial role in his life. After a mysterious benefactor provides Pip with a fortune, he moves to London with hopes of becoming a gentleman, believing that the money is from the wealthy and eccentric Miss Havisham.

As Pip rises in society, he becomes increasingly disillusioned with his expectations of wealth, social status, and love. Throughout his journey, he encounters a variety of memorable characters, including the beautiful but cold Estella, who has been raised by Miss Havisham to exact revenge on men. As Pip matures, he realizes the true meaning of loyalty, love, and moral integrity, learning that his notions of "great expectations" were misguided. The novel explores themes such as social class, ambition, guilt, and redemption, with Dickens using his characteristic wit and detailed characterizations to expose the flaws in Victorian society.
