The story follows the protagonist, David Innes, and his companion, Abner Perry, who embark on an extraordinary journey after they discover a strange machine, the "iron mole," which can burrow through the Earth's crust. The two men, along with the machine, descend into the Earth’s core, where they find a hidden prehistoric world, Pellucidar, a land that exists beneath the Earth's surface and is populated by primitive creatures, strange civilizations, and bizarre landscapes.
In Pellucidar, the two adventurers encounter a variety of dangers, including giant beasts, savage tribes, and a ruling class of tyrannical, human-like creatures. As they travel through this strange world, they also encounter Dian the Beautiful, a woman whom David Innes becomes determined to rescue from captivity. The novel follows David’s efforts to navigate the hostile environment of Pellucidar, overcome the challenges he faces, and ultimately free Dian.
Throughout the story, Burroughs explores themes of adventure, discovery, and the triumph of human ingenuity over natural obstacles. The novel is filled with action sequences, fantastical creatures, and a vivid portrayal of the hidden world inside the Earth.
