The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler

A dying millionaire hires private eye Philip Marlowe to handle the blackmailer of one of his two troublesome daughters, and Marlowe finds himself involved with more than extortion. Kidnapping, pornography, seduction, and murder are just a few of the complications he gets caught up in.

The story begins when Marlowe is hired by wealthy General Sternwood to investigate a case of blackmail involving one of his daughters, Carmen. As Marlowe delves deeper into the case, he becomes embroiled in a web of deceit, corruption, and murder that stretches far beyond the initial blackmail scheme.

As Marlowe navigates the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, he encounters a colorful cast of characters, including gangsters, corrupt police officers, and femmes fatales. Along the way, he faces numerous obstacles and dangers, from physical threats to attempts on his life.
